Platelet-Rich Plasma: Does It Work?

You’ve probably heard of injured athletes using platelet-rich plasma injections to get back in the game. However, platelet-rich plasma injections are also used in a variety of other procedures, from anti-aging to increasing sex drive to promoting hair growth. With so many benefits, it’s only normal to be skeptical of the claims platelet-rich plasma touts. So, does it really work? Learn more below.

Rejuvenation Through Platelet-Rich Plasma

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is prepared from the patient’s own blood in a simple, quick procedure. Essentially, platelets are isolated and concentrated from a normal blood sample. Platelets are normally released in the body following an injury—the platelets at the site of the injury rupture and release contents. Some of the contents cause blood clotting, which helps seal the injury. The other contents function in rejuvenation—large quantities of natural growth factors. When injected into an injured area of the body, these growth factors stimulate healing. When injected into aging tissues, these same growth factors stimulate rejuvenation.

Platelet-Rich Plasma and Skin Rejuvenation

Many of the skin changes that we think of as “aging” are actually due to accumulated damage from sun exposure. One clinical study reported that individuals affected by sun damage experienced dramatic improvements in skin thickness, elasticity, and appearance after three sessions of PRP injections into the facial skin. Other studies have reported that PRP injections can decrease the appearance of dark undereye circles, and can improve the firmness and elasticity of the skin.

Platelet-Rich Plasma and Hair Growth

A recent randomized placebo-controlled study published in September 2015 reported that a three month course of PRP injections into the scalp of balding men was remarkably effective in stimulating new hair growth in all treated men. No side effects were noted. Other studies have reported that it works for women affected by hair thinning, too.

Platelet-Rich Plasma and Sexual Dysfunction

Many men and women suffer from sexual dysfunction without ever seeking treatment. A simple series of injections of PRP into the area can induce the tissues to rejuvenate, and restore full function. In a rat model, PRP was able to cure erectile dysfunction. The same series of injections in women can also improve symptoms of urinary incontinence.
