How to Reduce the Effects of Sun Damage on Your Skin
Lounging in the sun on a warm summer day is relaxing, but it could be damaging your skin. Too much exposure to the sun over the years can cause wrinkles, age spots, dry skin patches and even skin cancer. And while you may not be able to reduce all of the effects of sun damage on your skin, here are a few tips on how to protect yourself.
Use Sunscreen
Most of us reach for the sunscreen before we head to the beach, but making sunscreen a part of your daily beauty regimen can reduce the effects of sun damage on your skin. If you want radiant and youthful-looking skin, apply sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher daily—even if you’re simply going to work or run errands. By reducing your daily sun exposure, sunscreen allows your skin to heal and repair existing sun damage on its own. Even better, daily use of sunscreen may lower your long-term risk of skin cancer.
Exfoliate Often
Excessive exposure to the sun can promote the buildup of stratum corneum, which is the dead, top layer of skin cells. The build up of this layer can cause skin to appear blotchy, uneven, and even dirty. Fortunately, you can restore the luster and radiance to your skin with regular exfoliation. Try using a loofah, sponge, body scrub, or microdermabrasion kit to slough off dead skin cells.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Good hydration is important for every part of your body, especially your skin. Between exposure to the sun, chlorine and salt water during the summer, your skin can be more prone to dryness than usual. That’s why it’s so important to stay hydrated. In addition to drinking enough water throughout the day, try using a hand and body cream alongside a moisturizing foot cream.
