5 Tips for Avoiding Holiday Weight Gain
Food is one of the things that makes the holidays so exciting. But between Thanksgiving and endless holiday parties, weight gain can start to feel like an inevitable part of the season. Fortunately, there are easy ways that you can avoid weight gain during the best time of the year. Here’s five tips to get you started:
1. Don’t go to a party hungry.
If you’re going to a party, eat a nutritious snack and drink a glass of water before you head out the door. This can help reduce your chances of overeating.
2. Pace yourself.
You are more likely to overindulge in high-calorie treats if you eat your food fast. Next time you’re at a holiday party, make a mental note to chew slowly and stop eating once you feel satisfied. Putting down your fork in between bites and opting to eat off of a smaller plate can also help reduce the amount of unnecessary calories you eat.
3. Select your sweet treats wisely.
You don’t have to say no to sweets completely to stave off holiday weight gain. After all, enjoying your favorite treats are one of the things that make the holidays exciting. However, try not want to overindulge. Instead of having big portions of dessert, try taking a small sample of your favorite treats. This will allow you to enjoy sweets without overindulging and you’ll avoid the post-sugar binge crash.
4. Limit how much alcohol you drink.
Liquid calories can contribute to weight gain. Alcohol also tends to reduce our inhibitions and increase our appetite, making unhealthy foods we’d regularly never consume seem fine. Try to limit your alcohol intake or opt for healthy drinks like water and tea.
5. Go for a walk.
The holidays can leave little time for exercising, but try to squeeze even a little bit of walking each day to help ward off the holiday weight gain. Aim for 20 to 30 minutes of walking per day, even if it’s split up in 10-minute increments.
